When should I choose a national company, and when should I choose a local mover?

National companies are experts in long-distance and international moves. If you need a door-to-door international move with customs handling, overseas delivery and full liability coverage abroad, a national van line or a dedicated international mover is the right choice.

The opposite is true for local moves. Local movers are generally better for short-distance moves within the same region, offering flexible schedules and personalized service. Local movers will be familiar with the area you are moving from and moving to. Being knowledgeable about an area can save time and money — if certain roads are closed, local movers will know an alternative route, and which roads are busiest and during what hours.

You can book a local move through a national carrier. National van lines are largely agent networks, and the “brand” you hire often subcontracts the actual move to a local affiliated agent. You may not know exactly who shows up on moving day.

Long-distance moving companies like the large national giants often calculate based on weight, mileage, or service level. This gives them an advantage when providing an upfront estimate.

The average cost to move in the Hudson Valley ranges from $341 to $2,097, according to MoveBuddha. The statewide range is wider — the average total move cost across New York State ranges from $504 to $4,342, with the exact cost depending on how many belongings you have and how far you’re relocating.

For labor-only moves, where you handle the truck rental yourself, Hudson area customers typically pay between $365 and $687 total, with hourly labor at around $76.

 

Personalized Service, Scheduling Flexibility and Regulations

Local firms do less volume, so they are likely to pay more attention to your needs. National moving companies handle a larger volume of moves, so they tend to have rigid schedules that don’t allow for much customization.

Local movers are licensed by state authorities but are not always regulated by federal agencies like national companies. National movers must be licensed by the U.S. Department of Transportation and comply with federal regulations — verifying a company’s U.S. DOT number and checking insurance coverage is crucial, according to Yahoo!
