Local Moving Checklist
A local move usually means you’re staying in the Hudson Valley or moving somewhere else in New York State.
- Check that your mover is licensed. For moves within New York, movers should be licensed by the state Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).
- Get written estimates from at least 3 moving companies. Compare what each one includes, not just the price.
- Start decluttering early. Sell, donate, or toss what you don’t need. If you need a hand, decluttering services can help you sort before packing day.
- Change your address. File with the post office, then update your bank, doctors, and subscription services.
- Set up your utilities. Schedule shutoff at your old home and service at your new one.
- Make a home inventory. NYSDOT suggests listing all your household goods, including the number of boxes and the condition of your furniture.
- Label every box. Mark the room it goes to, whether it’s fragile, and whether it should be opened first.
- Pack a first night bag. Include medicine, phone chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, and important papers.

- Check the mover’s USDOT number. The federal government advises avoiding brokers and movers that aren’t registered with FMCSA or that refuse to do a physical survey of your household goods.
- Ask for a survey. Your mover must base your estimate on a physical survey, which can happen at your home or by video, unless you waive it in writing.
- Read your rights booklet. Before your goods are moved, movers are required to give you a booklet called Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move. It also explains your rights if your items are lost or damaged.
- Choose your protection level. Your estimate will list two options: Full Value Protection, or a waiver that limits the mover’s liability to 60 cents per pound per item. Under that lower option, a 10-pound stereo worth $1,000 would only pay $6.
- Declutter before you pack. The less you ship, the less there is to pack, load, and protect on a long trip.
- Keep valuables with you. Carry jewelry, cash, passports, and important papers in your own car.
- Set up utilities early. After a long drive, you’ll want the lights, heat, and Wi Fi working when you walk in.
- Pack a bigger essentials bag. Plan for a few days, since your belongings may arrive after you do.
- Be there for pickup and delivery. Federal rules say you should be available when your shipment is picked up and delivered, or name someone to act for you.
- Check your inventory at delivery. Note any damage on the paperwork before you sign.
- After the move, test your smoke detectors, change the locks, and look up your new state’s rules for updating your driver’s license and car registration.
